WE had a great night at the 2019 Oldham Business Awards, where we were finalists in the Employer of the Year category.

This was the 11th year of the Oldham Business Awards, which are said to be one of the biggest in Greater Manchester and the north-west region, attracting almost 600 guests.

The night was hosted by BBC presenter Louise Minchin and Granada TV’s Caroline Whitmore, who congratulated RED Manufacturing team for being shortlisted as finalists and presented us with a certificate.

The Employer of the Year award category was sponsored by Ultimate Products, a world-class supplier of branded goods which works with major retailers such as Asda, Tesco and B&M.

Our business, along with sister company Ripple works with many high profile brands, and we were delighted to have the opportunity to meet Ultimate Products who attended the ceremony and were also on the for the awards judging panel.

Other key sponsors included Pearson Solicitors & Financial Advisers, Oldham College, Innovative Technology, Seftons Accountants and the Greater Manchester Business Growth Hub.

Following the dinner and awards ceremony, there was an after-party disco by presenters from radio station Revolution 96.2 including former Hacienda nightclub DJ Elliot Eastwick, which was great fun too.

Matthew Wolfenden, company director, attended the night with colleagues including account manager Richard Binks, paint and powder coaters Kevin McManus and Carl Iggulden, plus our engineering production manager Chris Shaw.

We were joined by one of our clients, Dan Wolfenden, architect and designer from sauna, spa and steam room specialist Milk Leisure, who work across the UK. We work with partners such as Milk providing bespoke architectural elements and furniture.

Matthew commented: “Being shortlisted as a finalist for Employer of the Year category was an excellent achievement and shows independent recognition for the good things RED does as an employer and an Investor in People Silver award winner. This was the first time we have entered the Oldham Business Awards and we really enjoyed it.

“We entered for a number of reasons. These included wanting to raise wider awareness and deepen understanding of our unique manufacturing capability which includes, bespoke joinery, cabinet-making, engineering/metal fabrication and paint finishing services. We also offer our own storage and logistics facility which many clients find . Red Manufacturing provides services to a range of business clients in commercial and industrial sectors.”

“In addition, we always aim to help our people realise their potential and have some great success stories, we are also trying to make a difference to young people’s lives and careers, and raise RED’s profile across the local community in Oldham. As part of this community-focused drive, we have recently signed-up a young member to join our team this summer for a work experience placement. More news on this soon.”

RED colleague Kevin McManus, aged 57, was among our group at the ceremony.

He added: “This was the first time I’ve been to the Oldham Business Awards and I really enjoyed it. It was a brilliant night. We hope to enter again next year and bring more staff with us from RED Manufacturing and Ripple.

“Being shortlisted by judges shows independent recognition for the good things that we do. I’ve been employed at RED for 25 years, which is quite a long time. I’ve been offered jobs elsewhere but I’ve always stayed here because this the best company I’ve ever worked for.

“RED really is a good employer. Our workplace culture encourages skills, learning and personal development. Job satisfaction and career development is an important part of our ethos. If anyone has any particular interests or ambitions, or personal needs or concerns, the company is always supportive.”

Our awards submission highlighted our company as a progressive employer, based in Greater Manchester and operating across the UK. We offer excellent career and training opportunities, with an innovative design, manufacturing, research and development culture.

We currently hold Silver accreditation with Investors in People and we aim to achieve Gold status soon. We have also been featured in the prestigious Sunday Times Best 100 Small Companies list.

Our business is enjoying good growth and we have exciting development plans. We currently employ 15 staff at our Oldham base and are planning to recruit more.

Skills are important and we place great emphasis on our staff becoming multi-skilled. But we are also flexible in our criteria, and focus on the person and their attitude and can teach new skills to the right recruits, if they are aligned to our culture and values.


In parallel with our investment in recruitment and staff development, RED Manufacturing is investing in the latest manufacturing technology and upgrading our workplace facilities to make it an even more appealing place to work.
